We eventually got down to the business of the day, which was to sample the endless stream of Port and Red wine on offer. After trying loads of different wines we finally settled on the quaffing easy drinking red called from Calitzdorp "Relishing red" and sitting in the sun listening to music.

After breakfast, where we found out how to get to the Port and Wine festival, we headed down to the old railway station where they were holding the event. As we arrived there we saw a Dad and Son comination having a lot of fun on some Quads. We never met them but they may well be local wine farmers as Quads are always a great means of transport around a farm.

On arrival we found what looked like a flea market and the main station area had been turned into a wine tasting hall. There was a band playing and lots of wonderful food and wine smells. Looks like it was gonna be a lovely day.

Next day, in search of a red wine hangover cure we went off in search of a good farmers breakfast. We found one at a small place in town, where they had coffee and a fire place to keep warm. After this we were off to the wine and port festival so we needed some food in us.

Afterwards we bought a box of freshly picked tangarines from the locals for a rediculously inexpensive amount which lasted us for a week.

As we came out the Restaurant we noticed the full moon in the clouds above the church over the road and to me it looked like something out of some sort of haunted house scary movie. We all took pics of it. Something about the eyes the clock tower turned into....

We found this little beauty which somehow seemed to come to life - or had we had too much to drink?

Having recently done a trip through Calitzdorp, and discovered the Naked Lady Bar I wanted to show my mates the place and have a drink there. We started off back at our accommodation and then headed into town again for a few drinks and a meal at The Dorpshuis where we had sat earlier and had coffee on arrival. Here we had a nice dinner with some more of the local red wine then moved onto the Naked Lady bar just up the road.

More and more bikes we coming into town. I wasn't sure how many we would get, but being the middle of winter I didn't hold out too much hope.

Getting ready to go out - quick glass of red and a chat

Evening falling over the Dorpshius

After dinner I noted a new bike in town and wondered how many would be there for the festival

Us at the Naked Lady bar trying out the beer the chap on the left had brewed - pretty good stuff!

Later chatting and enjoying the evening

Ah ha! more bike road runners had joined the party
Massive machine - Calitzdorp is on the R62 route a popular biking road

Moira and Rob arrived a little chilly but had had a great ride, albeit a little windy along the way. They were on Rob's newly acquired F1200GS, which I'd not seen until now, so I took a few pics while he was unloading.

Four of us decided to do a long weekend meeting in Calitzdorp in mid June 2011 for the annual Port and Wine Festival, both couples each on bikes. However due to it being the middle of winter with cold, wind and rain, only one brave couple made it on their bike.  Coming from Port Elizabeth they had to contend with wind but fortunately no rain.

We live further south in Cape Town and with cold, rain and wind, we decided it would be better to simply take the car. My wife is not big on riding bikes anyway, certainly not in the wind and rain.

So we drove up in the car and got there early so started the wine drinking while sitting by the fire, in the first hotel we found that looked good, making sure that when Rob and Moira arrived they would have their fire, coffee then wine and a place to sit, probably required in exactly that order!

Downtown Calitzdorp (a small Town)
We picked the Dorpshuis as it looked inviting and it came recommended
A bit cold to sit outside even though others were
Outside view
Far warmer in front of the fire with a Cuppaccino
Small but effective victorian fireplace
We just chatted and waited for our mates to arrive on their bike

What a great start to what was to become a memorable and wonderful weekend.
