Karoo - Day6 Leg21 - End ride farewell

Well all great times come to an end at some point, This was one of them. It had been an awesome 8 day outing with two days spent resting in the middle, and 3 days riding out and 3 days riding back. We had been through some incredible places with spectacular views and amazing roads. We'd stayed at friendly and clean accommodation reasonably.

Now arrived at the One Stop services just outside Cape Town for a final coffee and to let the rush hour traffic settle down before each heading in our different directions home. We were already planning the next trip, but said goodbyes and left.

Karoo - Day6 Leg20 - More Montegu pass

This is an incredible biking road because of the twisties, openness, mountain scenery and relatively good surface. It's a reasonably quiet road too so not too much traffic.

We were now on a rush to get home as time was running out in the day, so we took pictures in the early stages, then just bolted to the N1.

Karoo - Day6 Leg19 - Montagu pass

We rode on down the R62 through Barrydale and got to Montagu. Once there we decided to take the back way through the wine valley to the N1 as opposed to heading along the R62 to Robertson back to Cape Town. We had not taken this route before and were blown away by how beautiful it was, with mountain scenery, passes, twisty bends, etc.

Karoo - Day6 Leg18 - Ronnies Sex shop

You may or may not be aware, but through the Karoo along the Route 62 which goes down the back of the mountains in-land from the sea, is a little farm shop called Ronnies Sex Shop. It's a legendary place to stop. It's of course a must do stop when you are on the long hot and thirsty road in either direction.

They are also such a friendly bunch of people too, and offer true SA hospitality when you pop in there. We got Ronnie and his son to come outside and have their picture taken with us which was great. Thanks guys!

The story goes that Ronnie opened a farm stall, and one of his mates wrote "Sex" between Ronnies and Shop and suddenly his turnover went through the roof! And the rest is history.

Karoo - Day6 Leg17 - Calitzdorp stop

On arriving in Calitzdorp we immediately headed into a well known Pizza restaurant we have visited many times before called Lorenzo's. We needed food and this was one of the best places to get it, especially because we just both felt like pizza. The have a nice garden area out the back and so we parked up and wondered through there and sat down. While we were sitting there a few little tweety birds we wondering around on the floor looking for crumbs.

This was the last food stop before heading back home. After lunch and a few phone calls, we went off to the garage. We had come off many km's of gravel roads so we needed to get our tyres up to the right pressure for tar because from now on we were on the tar R62 route to Cape Town.

Karoo - Day6 Leg16 - Calitzdorp dam

Towards the end of this little gravel road along the base of the mountain, the road turns and starts heading away from the mountain down to the little town of Calitzdorp. Just before reaching the town, the road goes past a dam they use for water for the town. Not a particularly large dam but it is probably just about enough for the town.

The "Cold Beer" sign was very tempting but we still had a long way to go today and needed lunch as well so we carried on.
