Karoo - Day1 Leg17 - Desert Water

It is just one of those things, when you see water in the semi-arid desert it is an event. So we stopped and took in the surrounds. Even after all the flowers we had seen till now, which implied the most rain in the previous months for 30 years, it had still not dawned on us just how much water was about. This was the first little river crossing we had got to and usually most of the rivers would be bone dry.

But as it turned out we were to see quite a lot of water as we went through on this trip, so we didn't stop as much later.

Karoo - Day1 Leg16 - Desert space

The Inverdoorn website says "Experience the luxury of vastness", and having riden through there for some 300km, one certainly gets that experience. Big Sky, endless horizons with nothing but grasses and small bush in sight. Roads that wind and vanish over hills into the future. Not a single soul in sight (after meeting the farmer!) Even the shop are open and unattended, as you'll see in forthcoming blogs.

Karoo - Day1 Leg15 - Meet a farmer

Further down the dusty road we stopped to take some pictures and next minute from down some side little track came a little orange coloured van and pulled up next to us. This very friendly farmer came over and we started chatting. We asked him questions about the size of his farm and living life out in the middle of this vast open space.

Karoo - Day1 Leg14 - Desert colour

These pictures only begin to start describing just how bright and colourful the desert was that day after we had been to Inverdoorn. The part that one cannot see from these pictures is just how much of it there was mile after mile. Also there were patches of yellow and patches of this purple.

Karoo - Day1 Leg13 - Desert Oasis

The stop at Inverdoorn had certainly been a very pleasant surprise to us. So much so that we asked for a quick guided tour around the place and were happily obliged by the ladies. They showed us their medium range accommodation right through to the top of the range facilities, all fit for a Sheikh, who do fly in by helicopter apparently. What was so amazing is the 5 star restaurants and food on offer with game drives out in the bush and desert. We are changing our schedule now to include this as a destination on the Fairest Cape tour route, it's just too good to miss.
