Taking back roads always bring pleasant surprises. This one was no exception. We had ridden for about 30 or 40km through dusty Karoo out of Middelburg, when we came around one corner and into a farm which had a dam, green trees and green grass and the whole place was very lush. They obviously manage their water very well as the difference was very noticeable. We weren't sure if it was a guest farm or not, but whatever it was it was a very pleasant spot to live, if you like the quiet life, that is. We concluded that it must have a spring or an extremely large water table under it.
We then pressed on and there many more pleasant surprises awaiting us over the next few hills...
