Karoo - Day3 Leg6 - Luckhoff

The reason for this trip was because we were visiting our old boys, 35 years out of school reunion for the weekend. We knew we were reaching the catchment area of our old school, because we came upon a place called Luckhoff. We'd never been here before but knew the name well as some of our old school friends were well-to-do sheep farmers from the area who had come to our school from this town.

Karoo - Day3 Leg5 - Orange relax

We obviously spent too long on this bridge as there were so many pictures of it, but it was a good place to stop and relax.

We wondered what the Free State riding would bring? the next stop would be a place called Luckhoff.

Karoo - Day3 Leg4 - Orange river

We soon reached the border of the Karoo (Northern Cape) and the Orange Free State province. the vegetation had now noticeably changed to being slightly more thorny and bushy, but that probably had to do with the fact that it was a fertile valley next to the river. After that it got a little dry and sparse again.

We stopped on the bridge to chill out and look at the large river and the Meccano type bridge. Even though it was a single lane bridge, there were a few places to park out of the way, as large trucks came over from time to time and shook the whole bridge.

Karoo - Day3 Leg3 - Philipstown

The next town we reached was called Philipstown, which was very small and had a very interesting garage. See picture below. We had a little ride around a few blocks to see the place, but nothing much else to see other than a few people loitering around town. We were surprised there were no tumbleweeds blowing through town!

All too soon we were on the long road again and heading off towards Petrusville, which we never did stop for any pictures, in and just kept riding, mainly due to time pressure. There was one of an old caravan being used as a road side diner / farm stall which I wondered if I should take a picture of the people in and around it, but decided not to and kept going, as we still had a long way to go and not a lot of time.

Karoo - Day3 Leg2 - Deserted De Aar station

Most South Africans aged in their 40's & 50's would remember having probably been through the De Aar station in their army days. It was the then very busy central hub of Southern African train travel if you were going up towards Namibia or Upington, from either Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, East London or from Cape town.

We decided to actually go to De Aar on this trip simply because we had never been there on any other means of transport other than a train in our past. We reminisced about how the train would pull into De Aar at about 9pm and be there till 2 or 3am while it waited to be transferred onto another line and hooked up to some other loco (all steam back in the mid to late 70's, early 80's). Some of the guys would use the quiet time to sleep, others would sneak off the train and head down to the De Aar Hotel for one too many drinks, sometimes to completely miss the train when it left!

We thought - OK so that was a bit of an anti-climax lets move on

Karoo - Day3 Leg1 - Pass Kids as we leave

We woke up to cold and fresh but crisp and sunny winters morning. We had a really good breakfast and planned our route to Bloemfontein. The goal was again to maximize dirt road, but we had to balance that against arrival time as we were to meet our friends at 16:30 odd, so had to put some tar sections in just to ensure we made it on time.

As we pulled out of the lodge, we passed a pre-primary school and based on previous experience in Africa with Kids (see Kids in Africa are Happy and love motorcycles), where they simply love motorbikes, we felt we had to drive past twice and get them happy and excited. So Richard went back and rode past revving the bike and the kids loved it. I took the pictures. This is where a good zoom would have been fantastic.
