Karoo - Day6 Leg15 - More Groenfontein

This Groenfontein valley seems to have such history and scenic beauty as well, We discovered what looked like a lovely old rustic farm house that now appears deserted and on the verge of looking a little like a haunted house. It seems to be wanting to tell it's story, but we do not have the time to stop and find it out. We carry on down the road towards Calitzdorp.

Karoo - Day6 Leg14 - Groenfontein

Once past the Swartberg Private Game Reserve, the road mostly winds along following a river valley until you get to Calitzdorp. Gravel all the way, it definitely takes after its name which translated means Green Fountain (Groenfontein). Along the route are farmsteads, farm workers homes and they are all extremely proud of their homes making up colourful flower gardens, etc. I love this route, the more I do it the more I enjoy it, riding along the base of the mountain, this is definitely one of those lesser traveled roads.

Karoo - Day6 Leg13 - Swartberg animals

Having come down the Ocean side of the Swartberg pass, away from the semi-arid conditions of the other side of the mountain range, one enters this wonderful world of a lusher, greener, apparently more fertile place. Because it is still rather remote, there are many farms but fortunately also a game reserve along the side of the base of the mountain called the Swartberg private reserve, protects what the original environment used to look like.

Karoo - Day6 Leg12 - Ostrich farm

Down the other side of the pass we head into Ostrich country. I've never ever seen one with it's head in the sand so not quite sure where that idea comes from?

Karoo - Day6 Leg11 - Down other side

Once out of the misty cloud covering over the top of the mountain ridge, the vista opened up into a view that we could see for miles, albeit a little murky and gray compared to the usual clear sunlight views we normally get on a clear day. This part of the trip is always amazing because of where we go next. There is a section of about 100km of back roads through green valleys and past a huge game reserve where you see animals and natural rural life before reaching a place called Calitzdorp.

Karoo - Day6 Leg10 - Misty section

We had wondered how bad the visibility was going to be in the mist, made up of cloud coming over the peak of the mountain, but when we got there it was nothing like as bad as we had expected it might be. Not cold nor wet. The sun even came out in gaps in the cloud every now and again. We stopped off at "The Top" took some pictures and then set off down the mountain. Saw and even managed to get a picture of a Klipspringer on the side of the mountain next to the road.

The Mist wasn't nearly as bad as we had thought it might be. Not too wet or cold.

Moments of sun came though the clouds lightening up the area

As we dropped out of the bottom of the cloud it was fine again
