Day 18 - Leg 6 - Alan missing but we all make it home Ok

This continues the series of my Motorcycle Adventure travels from Durban to Lesotho which was the third goal, over a week. Details of the "http://africa4adventure-motorbiketours.blogspot.com/2011/04/planning-lesotho-expidition.html" whole trip here.

No trip ever goes without its little mishaps. In this case it was the mysterious vanishing of Alan and Claire along the way. Two bikes stopped at a roadside cafe for some cooldrink and the other bike (Alan's) that was a little further behind, with Claire on the back, came driving past us. We were standing on the side of the road waving and shouting, trying to flag them down, but they did not see us and carried on.

By the time we had got back on the bikes to tried to catchup, we realised they were long gone. We also thought they may have taken an incorrect turn as the road forks one tar and one dirt, but you have to turn off onto the tar. Thats when all the debating, concern and indecision set in. Should we head back and look for them? What if they had come off the bike and were lying in the gutter? We tried phoning, but no answer.

We drove further and asked the local police who were manning a road block if they had come through.... Finally when we got to the border post and tried to phone again; nothing. Two minutes later our phone rang and it was them saying they had gone through the border post and were waiting for us at the coffee shop! Relief - we could stop being concerned about them. We were all safe, it had been a fantastic gtrip and we could make it home Ok.

Last stop with Alan's bike part of the party
Parked up chatting to the police about if they had seen a motorcycle come through - they said not, but in fact it had come through in hindsight
Looking back - where are they?
Discussion and indecision - but a nice place to have that discussion
All back safely and in one piece after a wonderful trip
Fill up before heading the last 150km to Paul Roux
Rob's arms stuck in the riding position?
Back at the holiday home in Paul Roux

I thought I'd take a set of different homesteads we saw along the way. We got to one place where there were quite a few which you could see almost from the top down from one hill down onto another.

Stopped on the top of a major section for a break, we survey all around us of what had been and what was to come. It was all fantastic. Nothing like being out on the bikes in the fresh air and sunshine having fun. Takes a lot of beating.

Stopped and relaxing after a longish run

Pan of the crest of the hill
Looking ahead it looks brilliant
You can see the fantastic route so far looking back
Not quite the full team pic

Chilling
Watch that truck heading your way Rob!

The route back was the best of all! As you can see by the pictures we had a perfect day weather wise. We made really good time as there was less stopping for pictures and more time blasting around the twists and turns, and other times where it was easy and slow going.

You can tell from this what the weather was like. Sunny and no wind at all

Magic riding around twisty turns and next to rivers and mountains

A massive eagle (Lammergaier I thought) flew from the side of the road and landed on a haystack in the middle of the field too far to picture - it is there - by the time the bike stopped, got the camera out, it was miles away...

Awesome

More awesomeness

Same again zoomed out

Someone didn't like this road sign. It says "Couple of hills, couple of bends, Semonkong lodge is where the road ends. 23km"

The next day it was bitterly cold in the morning as you can see by the frost in soem of the pictures. We planned to set off at about 10am once it warmed up a little. Charles had to get petrol as he had a slightly smaller tank.

7am frost on the lawn and roof
Steam coming off the parasols as the sun came out
Semonkong village
Found the pumps now to find the attendant
Back on the road again

We ate and drank like kings for a very reasonable amount considering the particular location we found ourselves in, which felt like the middle of nowhere after that longish ride here! The chef and the waitrons did a wonderful job keeping us well supplied and 10/10 for their service. It was a great spot to stay and visit, and for which we would all happily go back to over and over again! The evening in the Pub was a friendly affair chatting and laughing with all.

After a great dinner

Keeping warm at the fire

Everyone was gravitating there

Good evening had by all

Bit of banter, bit of pool...

Nice warm fire as it was -1degree C outside at least

keeping warm

After the ride to the falls and back, while not far, we were still keen to get into a nice warm room and have some red wine / beer and chill for a bit. A few of us were feeling like we were getting colds and not 100% strong. We got back and decided to have a few glasses and chill out for the rest of the day.

We thought we'd start with a few of the local beers "Maluti's" named after the mountains

Rob and Charles enjoying the Maluti's

Later, in the pub, we met up with two people from Aussie we'd met who had done the walk to the falls

We had a gfood chat to them about Lesotho and their own travels they were planning up through Africa on a bike, as they drew inspiration from Alan & Claire who'd already done it

More Red wine Rob? Yes - I'm afraid so.
